Biographie de cet écrivain américain, mort de la tuberculose en 1900, à l'âge de 28 ans. D'abord journaliste à New York, S. Crane commence à écrire en 1893 et, après quelques revers, connaît le succès avec son roman "L'insigne rouge du courage". Talonné par le manque d'argent et les dettes, il multiplie les écrits et couvre divers conflits. Il a été l'ami des écrivains J. Conrad et H. James.
